Episode 228 : House of the Dead Remake

Ep 221 : 10 Year Celebration Mailbag!

June 11, 2025

We have somehow lasted 10 years and we're still going strong!  And to celebrate, we're not going to dwell on our successes or mention our failures, but we're going to let you do that as we answer a ton of mail from you, our listeners. Thank you again for all your support and we hope to keep you entertained for many more years to come! Episode 220 : Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance (PS2)

May 28, 2025

It's another patron request, sans Billy, as we take on Baldur's Gate : Dark Alliance for the PS2!  It was also released on the XBox, GameCube, and even the GBA, but we both played it on the PS2 for this episode.  This is a Diablo-style game, but based in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and has a far more action-arcade style than the previous Baldur's Gate games had -- but is that good or bad? LateToGaming who picked this game for us to play can be found many places, but he recommended Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/latetogaming/ Want to jump right to the game?  Charge your shot for the 11:20 mark. Episode 219 : Spellcaster (Master System)

April 30, 2025

We're taking on another request, this time for Sega's 8-bit console.  We're looking at Spellcaster, a mash of a graphic adventure game and sidescrolling action sections, which is admittedly right in our wheelhouse.  Is this a forgotten gem, or best left forgotten?  We played it to let you know our thoughts. We also all have been playing the same current game, but not on purpose - and our patron Jason wanted to let everyone know about the Uncanny X-Cast, which you can find here : https://uncannyxcast.libsyn.com/ Want to jump right to the game?  Charge your shot for the 7:45 mark. Episode 218 : E.V.O. Search for Eden (SNES)

April 19, 2025

We're taking on an Enix title from Nintendo's 16-bit powerhouse, an action RPG game about evolution, as requested by Cody on our Patreon. Evolve your character from a fish up to a human, all while following a very specific "eat or be eaten" mindset, this is a unique title from the era for sure, but should you play it today?  We let you know our thoughts. And speaking of thoughts, I know we made some pretty bad Switch predictions before that system launched... and we are giving our thoughts on the Switch 2 this week before we get into the game.  I think this time we might share the opinions of many people out there, but go ahead and bookmark this one to run in our faces again. Want to jump right to the game?  Well switch on over to the 16:15 mark. Episode 217 : Fear Effect (Playstation)

March 28, 2025

This time we're taking on another of your requests, Fear Effect for the Playstation! This game is a lot like Resident Evil, but with a more mature storyline and some cool cel-shaded graphics, but should you hunt this down to try it now?  We played it to let you know what we think about it! Episode 216 : The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past - RANDOMIZED!

March 11, 2025

This week we're doing something very different!  By Patron request, we're playing a classic SNES game, The Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past, but we're playing it with a randomizer.  Items are moved around, meaning you'll tackle this game in a different order, with different weapons and items than you're used to, and it's a very different experience. Here's the directions we had : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82dogTS1KT4 (Not our video!) and then create your file over here : https://alttpr.com/en We discuss the game itself first, and then our experience with the randomizer, and then of course take on some listener mail. We followed Chester on a platform adventure game across the country in search of the map to Hip City, and made some new friends and enemies along the way. January 21, 2025

We're taking on another Patron request, this time on Shadow Hearts for the PlayStation 2! This RPG is a bit different from most turn-based RPGs, in that everything you do has some specific timing involved, the setting is a little out of the ordinary, and your main character can turn into different demons during the game. Is this a game worth checking out today? We played through it to give you our thoughts! We also discuss our thoughts on the Switch 2 reveal, and attempt to stay current with our mailbag, answering questions about aliens, guitars, spam, and maybe even a game or two. Episode 212 : Action MAX, Captain Power, and the 2024 Mailbag Cleanout!

December 30, 2024

It's our last show of 2024, and as tradition dictates we're going to clean out the mailbag to kick off the new year.  However, this year we're also taking on the Action MAX by Patron request, which was a videotape requiring home light gun console released in 1987.  We compared this system with another toy/game that was out the same time, Captain Power. This is a little different than our usual fare, but we think this ended up as an interesting look back on how companies were trying to complete with the NES at the time. December 11, 2024

We've got another patron request, this time we're looking at Diddy Kong Racing for the N64! Often maligned by Billy, is this really deserving of the "Poor man's Mario Kart" title he has given it, or is this an N64 game worth hunting down? We also take some Christmas themed questions, and food questions, and Christmas food questions. Want to start right at the game?  Jump in around the 8 minute mark! Originally released on SNES and Genesis, we all played the SNES version for this review. Bart has to complete a paper and waits until the last minute, and he falls asleep. We guide Bart through a series of dreamlike games to collect the pages of his paper to try and save his grade - and some of those games could even be fun. Also covered, a block of listener mail, most of it about buffalo wings. Episode 208 : Cold Fear (PS2/Xbox/PC)

October 30, 2024

Our 2nd Halloween episode for 2024, we're taking a look at Patron-requested Cold Fear!  This game came out right before Resident Evil 4, and maybe because of that it didn't really get as appreciated as it might have had it come out a year earlier. We played it again today to see if it's worth your time for a good scare! We also answer a whole pumpkin's worth of your questions, some scary, some less so! Episode 207 : Harvester (PC)

October 22, 2024

Our first Halloween episode of Retrovaniacs for 2024!  We're talking about Harvester for the PC, a point-and-click adventure game with an interesting twist both in story and in gameplay, a Patron Pick!  This 1996 adventure game tried to blend traditional adventure game puzzles with combat and a very adult storyline, and in some ways it succeeds -- but in others not so much. Also covered, we preview what other spooky games we have been playing, discuss horror levels and spooky segments in non-horror games, and more as we answer more of your mail. Episode 206 : Bucky O'Hare (NES)

September 30, 2024

This time we're talking about Konami NES action platformer, Bucky O'Hare!  Based on the comic and TV show that none of us were extremely familiar with, this looks to be Konami's take on Mega Man -- but is it a clone of a classic series or something else entirely? Episode 205 : Neutopia (TG16)

September 17, 2024

This episode we're taking another Patron request, this time for Neutopia for the Turbografx-16!  This game is definitely the TG16's take on The Legend of Zelda, but is it too much like that game or does it offer enough to stand out? Episode 204 : WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color)

August 29, 2024

We're covering another wrestling game, sort of?  WWF Betrayal is actually a side scrolling beat em up for the Game Boy Color, featuring 4 of the biggest stars WWF had to offer in 2001.  This game was developed by WayForward, who make some of the nicest retro-styled games to this day.  Was this a good blend of a solid license and a great developer? We also answer a question posed last episode about wrestler themed fast food meals, and some of your other pressing questions. Want to jump right to the show?  Start at the 8:00 mark! Episode 203 : Ghost in the Shell (Playstation)

August 20, 2024

This week we're looking at Ghost in the Shell for the Sony Playstation, a game based on the manga and universe of the anime we were all familiar with at the time. Is this a game worth playing if you love the anime, hate the anime, or just generally like mecha? We've played through it again to let you know our thoughts. Episode 202 : Metroid Prime (GameCube)

July 31, 2024

We're taking a look at the Metroid series first game into a 3D environment with 2002's Metroid Prime.  Released at the same time as Metroid Fusion - a more standard 2d Metroid game on the Game Boy Advance, this was a game developed by Retro Studios for Nintendo that tried to take the series into literally a new dimension.  Did it succeed in it's purpose, and is this still worth playing now?  We'll let you know our thoughts on it. Episode 201 : The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (NES)

July 17, 2024

We're doing another patron request, this time we're looking at The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (aka Fantastic Dizzy) for the NES!  The Dizzy series was pretty big in Europe due to it's popularity on home computers, but in the US we didn't really get into it - but in 1991, Codemasters and Camerica made a big bet on Dizzy for the NES, building a new game that took the "Greatest Hits" of the previous Dizzy titles and bringing it to video game consoles.  We're all new to the world of the Yolkfolk, so we're taking a look at this action puzzler now! Episode 200 Spectacular - General Chaos Revisited and Summer Mailbag!

June 28, 2024

200 episodes?  It's hard to believe but its true.  And we're marking this occasion by looking back at one of our earliest games - General Chaos for the Sega Genesis!  In episode 4, we looked at this game and it's the one that we've gotten the most pushback on.  So, we're looking at it again with new (yet more experienced) eyes to see if we were wrong. We also go through a ton of mail, talk about the latest Nintendo Direct, and more on our 200th episode! Want to jump right into the game?  Start at the 13:15 mark! Episode 198 : Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater

May 21, 2024

Another game requested by our patrons, and this one comes from Patrick who wants us to talk about a bonafide classic game, Metal Gear Sold 3 : Snake Eater! We've covered the original Metal Gear Solid in the past and liked it, but many people regard this as the finest game in the series.  Do we think that's the case in 2024?  Listen to hear our thoughts! May 7, 2024

As requested by our Patron Antonio, we're talking about Mafia, which was released for the PC, and then ported to the PS2 and Xbox!  Jeremy P played through the PS2 version, and Jeremy G played a little bit of all of them, and we're here to tell you if we think they are worth revisiting today! Also, we answered some of your questions, including least favorite gaming era, how manly we are, and speaking of manly -- Steak. Want to jump right to the show?  Start at the 10:00 mark! Episode 196 : Super Adventure Island II (SNES)

March 28, 2024

Another patron request, we're talking about Super Adventure Island II for the Super Nintendo! We have played New Adventure Island for the TG16 before for the show, and we had all played earlier Adventure Island games, so we assumed this was yet another standard platformer where you collect fruit and run from left to right-- and we were wrong! This is a true adventure game, with an overworld, inventory, and even some puzzle solving.  Listen as we discover a game all of us had overlooked before! Episode 195 : Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)

March 7, 2024

We conclude our FFVII coverage (see our most recent bonus shows for patrons on FFVII Advent Children and our round-table about Remake) with a look at the startlingly different take on the FFVII gameplay with Final Fantasy VII : Dirge of Cerberus for the PlayStation 2!  This game let you play as Vincent in a mostly solo adventure that wasn't an RPG but a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements, and we're letting you know if we think it's worth playing, worth looking at for the story, or worth forgetting about. This was a patron picked episode by Shaun from Failure2Conform, and you can find his music on https://failure2conform.bandcamp.com/ or on all socials as Failure2Conform! We also kick things off with our thoughts on the first bit of FFVII Rebirth, and answer a ton of questions about Billy.  Why not? Episode 194 : Suikoden (PlayStation)

February 6, 2024

We're covering another request - Suikoden for the PlayStation!  This game is a classic style JRPG that adds a large cast of playable characters, large scale battles, and an upgrade system that allows you to really modify your party in many ways.  This game led to a series that was prevalent on the PlayStation 1 and 2, but has faded out over the years, although there is an HD remaster on the way.  We played the original to see how this one holds up today! Also discussed, new foods and games for 2024, memories of gaming with friends, and maybe the most devisive video game question we've answered -- Is Zelda an RPG? January 15, 2024

It's our first episode of 2024, and we're starting it off with a Patron requested game, Body Harvest for the Nintendo 64 as picked by Joey H.!  This game was developed by the company that would go on to make Grand Theft Auto III and change the landscape, and it has a lot of the things we'd see in that game-- but is there a reason this never had the success as their later offerings?  We'll tell you what we thought! As it's the start of the year, we talk new Christmas presents and purchases, and of course, answer some of your questions to try and stay current, and immediately fall behind. Episode 187 : Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver

September 24, 2023

We're digging into the sequel to Legacy of Kain, which takes the top-down evil Zelda style Playstation gane and turns it into a 3d evil Zelda style Playstation game - but is that transition a successful one?  Does it still have that Legacy of Kain feel, even though you aren't playing as Kain? This was a patron request, and at least one of us hadn't really played it before, so we did - and we're here to talk about it. For the first time, we're reviewing a game that never made it out to North America!  Thanks to patron "The 16-Bit Big Boss", we're taking a look at Terranigma! It's an action-RPG from the people behind Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, but this third game in this thematic trilogy never made it to our shores. Episode 183: Cratermaze (TurboGrafx-16)

June 29, 2023

Oh hey - it's a Turbografx game, but wait!  It wasn't picked by Jeremy P-- this one is a patron pick! Kevin asked us to cover Cratermaze, an early action puzzler for the console! And it's one Jeremy P even hadn't played before! Also covered, jerks from video games, food that only a hobo would eat, and probably some more talk of Stardew Valley. Want to jump right in?  Dig to the 10 minute mark! Episode 182 : Rise of the Dragon (Sega CD)

June 15, 2023

We didn't plan on covering two graphic adventures in a row, but both were patron requests, and this time Drew on Patreon has requested we play the Sega CD game, Rise of the Dragon!  This cyberpunk detective game places you as Blade Hunter, sent to find out how and why the mayor's daughter was killed, and we found out - but should you?  Listen to hear our thoughts. Also discussed, maybe we all started Zelda TotK and Street Fighter 6 - or maybe we're all still playing Stardew Valley.  Who knows?  And of course, we take some listener mail. Want to move your cursor to the start of the episode?  I'd try around the 11 minute mark. May 18, 2023

Aye, matey! We're gathered here at the SCUMM Bar in Melee Island to talk about a graphic adventure requested by one of you Patrons - The Secret of Monkey Island! Ported to Sega CD, this was originally a PC game that put you in the shoes of unlikely pirate, Guybrush Threepwood, and follows his quest to become a pirate and in the process defeat the evil ghost pirate LeChuck! If you like classic point and click adventure games, this may be well worth looking into - we'll tell you why! We also pilfered a bounty of listener questions to discuss soundtracks, VR wishes, a little bit of food as always, and as you would expect - Donkey Kong's doodads. Episode 180 : Bionic Commando (NES)

May 5, 2023

As requested by patron Robert C. (find him at https://www.tiktok.com/@robertcarr75), we're taking a look at the NES version of Bionic Commando!  A completely different game than the arcade game of the same name, Capcom made this a full adventure with equippable items, minor puzzles, and a much longer mission - but did this game's awkward mechanical arm work well in lieu of jumping?  We're playing it again now to let you know if we think it did! Also discussed, turning each other into retrogaming characters, fake video game OSTs, and our poor understanding of copyrights! Want to swing right to the episode?  Start at the 9:40 mark! April 10, 2023

This time on Retrovaniacs, we're taking on a Patron request to cover Red Earth, Capcom's "lost" arcade fighter that has recently been released on consoles on the Capcom Fighting Collection!  Is this a game that we're lucky to try out finally after over 25 years, or was this better left as a footnote in their arcade catalog? We also talk video game hot takes, Ys games, and Jeremy P gets an interesting proposal... Want to get right to the game? Skip to the 10:00 mark! March 27, 2023

Remember when Squaresoft put out a classic 2d shooter for the Playstation? Well, we're going to play it again and talk about it this time as we discuss Einhander! Does this shooter hold up today, or is this a case where maybe an RPG studio shouldn't have branched this far out? As always we discuss some other games we've been playing, and of course answer listener mail from folks with questionable names. Want to get right to the game? Blast off to the 10:40 mark! Grab your favorite chaps and cowboy hats - because we're taking on a game requested by Julian over on our Patreon, he's asked us to saddle up and play Red Dead Revolver, the 2004 prequel to Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption series. Does this game hit a bullseye, or is this game better off sent out to pasture? Also this episode, Jeremy G is back and we've got a ton of listener mail about memorable game sounds, "meaningless" game landmarks, and of course probably some fairly embarassing personal admissions. After an unexpected December break, we're back with a Patron requested episode on The Pagemaster - a platformer based on the Macaulay Culkin movie of the same name.  Is this a case where a licensed game holds up regardless of your thoughts on the movie?  We played it with little to no knowledge of the film, and shared our thoughts! None of us had played this before, so we did and give you our opinion!  Also discussed-- one of us is publically admitting his backlog failures, and the recent Street Fighter announcements.  And of course -- mail! Episode 155 : Destiny of an Emporer (NES)

February 1, 2022

It's a day late, but let's all pretend this hit on 1/31/22!  We're taking a look at this early JRPG for the NES, Destiny of an Emporer, by Capcom!  This was a patron request, so we talk to them for their thoughts on why it was picked, and of course we answer a ton of listener mail - including one of the worst questions we've ever been sent. The patron who sent us this request was Steve V, who you can see do some skydiving over on https://vimeo.com/stevevig Want to skip right over to the episode?  Start at 6:00! Episode 154 : Deus Ex The Conspiracy (PS2)

January 13, 2022

It's the first episode of 2022, and it's a Patron-requested episode.  "Tom" has requested that we cover Deus Ex: The Conspiracy for the Playstation 2, because he really wanted us to do Deus Ex for PC and this is as close as we get!  Is it a solid port of a PC game, and is that game in general worth porting?  We played through it to give you our thoughts. We kick things off with a look back at our gaming experiences of 2021, and of course answer some listener mail to round out the episode. Want to skip right over to the episode?  Start at 10:30! December 30, 2021

It's slightly late, but still out before the end of December -- it's our annual Christmas show!  This time, we couldn't hold off any longer.  After 7 years of Billy threatening to cover Home Alone, we're doing it.  We're talking the Home Alone video games for the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, Game Gear, Master System, and PC and even the Amiga!  Keep the change, ya filthy animals. We also go through the remainder of our listener mail, to attempt to start 2022 with a clean slate. We cover it all, from retrogaming, to questions about relationships, to fast food choices, and we start a new terrible argument -- is gravy a sauce? December 17, 2021

Episode 151 : Conker‘s Bad Fur Day (N64) / Conker Live and Reloaded (XBox)

November 30, 2021

Our apparent love affair with Rare continues, as we look at another one of their offerings, Conker's Bad Fur Day. Originally released on the Nintendo 64, it was re-released later with some multiplayer addons for the XBox. Why would you play another cartoony looking 3d platformer? Maybe because this one, despite its looks, is clearly not for kids. Is that a good thing? We played it again to see! The onslaught of listener mail continues, and we try to put a dent in it as well with some questions about remakes, gaming related violence, and honk honk honk honk. Want to get right to the game?  Conker doesn't waste time, the game talk is right there at the start. Episode 150: Goldeneye 007 (N64)

November 17, 2021

We've hit episode 150 and we couldn't have picked a better game ourselves than Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64- and we didn't have to, because this one was a patron request!  Does Goldeneye hold up, or is this another older 3d title that really isn't worth playing today?  Grab that awkward N64 controller, and join us to see what we thought. We talk about our thoughts on the new Switch Expansion Pack and the additional N64 games that it provides for possibly a hefty fee, and we answer a ton of listener mail about retrogames, remasters of our own shows, and Jeremy P's good looks (and bad editing). Episode 149 : Silent Hill 3 (Playstation 2)

October 29, 2021

As #Retroween2021 comes to a close, we're revisiting the small forgotten vacation town of Silent Hill for the 3rd year in a row. This time, we follow Heather Mason and her trip to the town that she was born in, although she can't remember much of the specifics...  A direct sequel to the original Silent Hill, that also has a lot to do to match the marvel that was Silent Hill 2, how well does the third outing hold up today?  We'll let you know what we think. Also, we covered another huge chunk of listener mail, covering among other things: lesser known retro games, sexy fish, and local restaurants of our youth.  Want to get right to the game?  So did we-- just start listening! Episode 148 : Resident Evil Code Veronica (Dreamcast)

October 14, 2021

For our first episode of #Retroween2021, we're revisiting a series we haven't covered since 2017 -- we're looking at the Dreamcast entry in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Code Veronica!  This is one of the last games in the series to have the "Tank controls" that the original game did, and it was the first in the series on (what was at the time) a next generation console.  This one hasn't had a remake yet-- is it one that should? We also answer a TON of listener mail, so stick around to see if we answered yours! Want to get right to the game?  So did we-- just start listening! Episode 147 : Metroid Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance)

September 27, 2021

Metroid Dread is on it's way, but it's going to show up in October, and we'll be busy with our annual month of horror games.  However, we are very excited about Metroid Dread, and so we're taking a look at the 2004 remake of the original Metroid -- Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance. We also talk about the most recent Nintendo Direct and answer some listener mail about getting burned out, tastes changing over the years, and some Final Fantasy. Episode 146 : Syphon Filter (Playstation)

September 10, 2021

After talking way too much about Psychonauts 2, we dove into Sony's Syphon Filter, a 3d action game that sold well enough to have 5 sequels, and is included on the Playstation mini -- but is this worthy of being called a classic, or is this one better left in 1999? We also take some more listener mail all about cartridge systems in 2021, more flight sim music, and I'd bet a question somehow relating to food. Don't want to hear about Psychonauts 2? I don't know why you would, but head on over to the 10:30 mark! Episode 145 : James Bond 007 (Game Boy)

August 27, 2021

This time we're taking a Patron request to cover the 1998 Nintendo Game Boy game, James Bond 007! After Goldeneye was a smash on the N64, this game came out the next year for Nintendo's handheld -- but was it a first person shooter, a stock platformer, or something else entirely?  We were pleasantly surprised with what we got here. Also discussed, more Final Fantasy XIV, listener questions about our health habits, and even squeezed in some game talk in here someplace. Want to get right to the action? August 16, 2021

This time we're taking another Patron request, and this time it's Planemech asking us to cover the Super Nintendo comic book brawler Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage!  Based on the comic book event of the same name, does this game hold up now, or like many super hero related games from the era does it just fall flat?  Listen to find out. We also had a bunch more questions sent in from our listeners, and we answered them -- all your questions about arcade game preferences, bad memories that taint a gaming experience, what IS retro anyway, and more! Episode 143 : Castlevania Aria of Sorrow (GBA)

July 30, 2021

This episode we're taking a Patron request from "Logan" who has asked us to cover Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, the third game in this series on the Game Boy Advance.   We've shown our love for the 16-bit Castlevania's and Symphony of the Night in the past, but is this a stumble for the series like some of the earlier handheld offerings?  We'll tell you what we thought. We also haven't been a full trio for a while, so we've got over an hour of listener mail to tackle.  Let's see if we lost our minds (at least more than usual) Want to jump right to the game? We let you know our thoughts. Also discussed, Jeremy P gets into his most recent attempt at playing Metal Gear Solid 4, we talk about chicken sandwiches, difficulty settings in video games, and (of course), a Sax-o-beat. This time we're taking a look at the virtual pet experience, Seaman for the Sega Dreamcast.  One of the few games that used the Dreamcast microphone, you would raise Seaman from an egg, teach him some words, and then he'd ask you about your poor life decisions.  Seaman is definitely a unique game, and we're here to talk about what exactly you do in it. It's a game about gangs who fight via graffiti while skating around the city, and avoiding some aggressive law enforcement. There's not a whole lot out there like this- is that a bad sign? Episode 132 : Lemmings (SNES)

January 26, 2021

We don't cover computer games on Retrovaniacs, however we do cover computer ports.  So, we used the SNES port of Lemmings to discuss the series as a whole, and focus on why this game may or may not work on a console. Also discussed- the shortest what we've been playing in about 5 years, cartoons and toys we liked as kids, Metroidvania suggestions, and a question about Great Tiger? Episode 131 : Spyro (Playstation)

January 12, 2021

For our first show of 2021, we take a look at the first game in the Spyro series. This colorful Playstation platformer looks a lot like it's made for kids, but is there enough here to keep anyone's interest? We also kick of the new year answering some questions about our hopes and dreams for 2021, licensed games, and creating a game based on our own lives. Episode 130 : Snatcher (Sega CD)

December 23, 2020

For our last regular episode of 2020, we take a look at an early Hideo Kojima game that most of us in the US have no way to play - Snatcher, which was only released outside of Japan on the Sega CD format.  Kojima's post-Metal Gear game is not an action stealth game like his most famous series, but instead is a sci-fi story driven interactive storybook that would appeal to fans of Blade Runner.   And as a bonus, it occurs around Christmas! We also talk about our favorite and least favorite games of 2020, and take some listener questions on classic Retrovaniacs topics : Stardew Valley, fast food breakfasts, and games we may have forgotten. Thank you for all your support over 2020, and we will see you in 2021! Episode 129 : Clash at Demonhead (NES)

December 8, 2020

This episode we take on an NES game that has a rabid fanbase, and none of us had played it before to see why.  Recommended by Patron "John B", Clash at Demonhead is what we played, and we'll tell you all about it. We also take on a batch of listener questions about our recent Mega Man 5 show, fighting games, newer retro-style games, and if there were any major series we hadn't tried. Episode 128 : Mega Man 5 (NES)

November 12, 2020

It's a crossover episode with the 20XX podcast!  We're taking a look at a late-NES era game in the Mega Man series, Mega Man 5!  At this point, we had 4 other Mega Man games on the NES and we were all well into the 16-bit consoles, so many of us had probably overlooked this game in Mega Man's library. We are joined with an interview with Kyle Von Kubik (aka ObeyKube) about the 20XX podcast which played through all the numbered Mega Man games over the last year, and the Kickstarter art project he has out currently featuring robot masters from all the Mega Man games.   He's involved with a new project involving Sonic and Saturday morning cartoons, so we talk about those too! And as always, we answer your questions about video game food, mascots, and tabletop gaming! Want to skip right to the interview?  Start at 11:35!  To find out more about 20XX, and the other projects discussed with ObeyKube, check out http://www.twentydoublex.com, http://oneradtee.com, and http://www.oneradpodcast.com __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? October 31, 2020

We took this Halloween as a good reason to return to the cursed hamlet of Silent Hill, as we joined James Sunderland as he makes his way to find his dead wife in Silent Hill 2.   We loved the first game last Halloween - is this a worthy sequel? We also answer the spookiest listener questions about The Amico, import game collecting, and Super Mario 35! Episode 126 : Clock Tower (Playstation)

October 14, 2020

For our first episode this Halloween in 2020, we are taking on a Patron request to cover the Playstation horror game Clock Tower.  While this is not the first game in the series, it's the first that was released outside Japan, and for most of us was our introduction to the series.  Will we figure out who Scissorman is, and how to stop him?  Also, should you bother doing so as well?  Listen to find out! We also take on a monster-sized chunk of listener mail all about arcade hustling, games we can't help but play repeatedly, everyone's favorite grandpa, and we try and figure out what "an adventure game" even means anymore. Want to jump right into a lengthy intro you can't skip?  Start at the 10:00 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 125 : Beavis and Butt-head (Genesis)

September 30, 2020

It's another Patron requested episode, and we've been asked to cover the 1994 Genesis half-puzzle, half-platformer Beavis and Butt-head for the Sega Genesis.  Does one of the only games starring GWAR rule, or suck?  We played it and let you know our thoughts. Also covered, games we think are overrated or often overlooked, general adventure game trends, and we unsurprisingly got a few questions sent our way about "Semen Grandpa" from last episode.  It gets worse. Join us as we help Willy scratch his Nintari itch and save the town from the evils of Tootsweet, or at least we tried to. Also included, we talk a little about FFXIV again, take some complaints regarding our inability to pronounce words, and we introduce a character to the Retrovaniacs universe who probably isn't going away anytime soon. We played them both to let you know! Also discussed, Jeremy G pisses off some bards, Billy talks about his time off the show (and his appearance on BossRushGames), and we answer several questions we received about our last episode on Tomb Raider. July 28, 2020

It's another Patron-requested game- we're taking a look at the SNES version of Gemfire (which was also released on the NES, Genesis, and PC).  This Koei strategy game came with a 50+ page manual, and doesn't explain itself very well in-game, but once we took the time to figure it out, did we decide it was a strategy classic?  Listen to see what we thought.   Also discussed, dream fighting games, pizza, wrestling games, and more!   Want to skip right to the battle?  Start at the 12:00 mark! __________________________   If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333   If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? July 8, 2020

We take on another Patreon requested game, the second G.I. Joe game on the NES, The Atlantis Factor by Capcom!  Capcom made some solid licensed games in the NES era (Disney aftenoon, anyone?), but did they do well with G.I. Joe or is this another garbage use of what could be a good license? Also discussed, vacation gaming memories, a frosty debate, and a question about the best little handheld that didn't - the Vita. Episode 119 : Actraiser (SNES)

June 24, 2020

This episode we take a look at an early SNES blend of action and strategy - Actraiser! Is this a game that successfully blends two gameplay styles into something great, or is this another example of two great tastes that should be eaten separately? Also discussed: what arcade games we would buy if we could only buy one, licensed titles that missed the mark, and we got more food questions, so we get a little greasy for you yet again. Finally, Stallone fans celebrate!  Courtesy of patron "Metal Dooley", we're taking a look at Judge Dredd, the 1995 SNES / Genesis game tie-in to the 1995 movie based on the comic book you probably aren't super familiar with!  We weren't familiar with this one, so we all went in blind to see how this 16-bit licensed property game turned out. Also discussed, our thoughts on the Harv's Island June event on Animal Crossing, our favorite co-op gaming experiences, and thanks to our listener mail segment -- Breakfast Sandwiches.  Probably our most compelling content in years, to be honest. Episode 115 : Alpha Mission vs Star Force (NES)

April 16, 2020

This time we tried something slightly different from the norm, instead of looking at one specific game, we are looking at two very similar top down shooters from the NES era, Alpha Mission (by SNK) and Star Force (by Tecmo).  Both of these arcade ports are ones that we had as kids -- both share the dubious honor of being a game we bought "because they were there" and as a result played them a lot. We look at these two games specifically to answer a question : Is it better to be a game that tries to do a lot of interesting things but sort of fails, or a game that tries to do almost nothing and succeeds? We also answer several listener questions about arcade ports, bonus show questions, and a listener feels we missed the mark on Starfox 2 a while ago. March 30, 2020

We take a look at our first Xbox game, and the 4th Oddworld title, Stranger's Wrath! The last of the Oddworld games released (not including remakes) was an odd blend of 3rd and 1st person action, with all the character expected of an Oddworld game - but with an HD remake out now for modern systems, we thought we'd look into how this game holds up today. Also discussed, phobias around certain animals appendages, villains who become partners in classic games, Johnny Turbo, and much more! We do spoil this game, so if you want to stop listening at the spoiler mark, you can start again at about the 52 minute mark for Listener Mail. February 24, 2020

Our second game for #FightMonth is a Rare created and Nintendo published fighter - Killer Instinct! All of us had played this one before, but hadn't revisited the original SNES version in quite a while.  Does this one hold up to the classics of the day?  We give you our thoughts, and Billy shares a couple stories about his youth and this game. Also discussed this episode, a little too much coverage of the Resident Evil 2 remake, probably not enough time spent on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and listener questions on game censorship, Urban Champion, and other fighting games we think tried something different and may not be remembered today. January 28, 2020

This episode we take a look at Sunsoft's classic NES title, Blaster Master! The original Blaster Master came out in 1988 and became a notable NES title for it's soundtrack and the mix of two different gameplay sections in the game -- and of course, the incredibly cool upgradeable jumping tank you get to use.  This game is currently available on the Switch NES library, but is this another NES classic game that you had to be there to really appreciate? We also take a shot at some listener mail, discussing games you literally are unable to play anymore, memories of working at a game store, and spicy buttholes (?!) It's been a relatively Star Wars heavy few months, and we're going to pile right in on that with our look at 2002's tie-in game to Attack of the Clones, Star Wars : Bounty Hunter! This game attempts to explain why Jango Fett was chosen to be the source of the DNA for the clone army, and allows you to be one of the galaxy's most feared bounty hunters!  But, much like many Star Wars tie-in products over the years, is this game worth the republic credits? We also take on some more listener questions, this time covering retro remake disappointments and possible gaming fatigue. (We apologize for some of the sound issues, Billy's setup this week didn't have the finest internet connection, but I think we salvaged it) Want to jump right into a series of barrels?  Then shift to the 10:30 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 104 : Silent Hill (Playstation)

October 31, 2019

For the final show of #Retroween2019, we're taking a look at the OTHER big horror series that started on the Playstation -- Silent Hill! This series has as of late fallen truly silent, but for a while it was a staple series that took us into a hellish nightmare where we could never tell what was real and what wasn't.   Does the first trip to Silent Hill still hold up today?   We give you our thoughts on that. Also discussed, Halloween candies, Halloween gaming traditions, and of course some of the spookiest sound effects ever. October 10, 2019

Retroween2019 is in full effect, as our first regular Halloween episode is here!  This time we're taking a look at Sony's Medievil, a game where you play as a skeletal knight, fighting off the armies of the undead!  Many 3d platformers from the 32-bit generation haven't held up well, but is this one the exception to that rule? Also discussed - mean geese, apple arcade selections, and of course a batch of listener mail! BONUS SHOW : Retrovaniacs Weekend Warriors - Phantasy Star (Sega Master System)

October 6, 2019

Do you like to play retro RPGs?  The RPGs of the 8, 16, and 32-bit era of games are sometimes a little tough to get into, but we're going to take them on, one at a time, week by week.  Weekend Warriors is our chance to do just that!  This first episode is covering the first few hours of Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System.   Every week we will play another 5 hours or so of the game, find a checkpoint, and then talk about that week of the game, up until we beat it.  This way, you could casually play along with us if you like! If you like this show, additional episodes of Retrovaniacs Weekend Warriors are ONLY available to our Patreon backers, so please consider joining here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333

Episode 102 : Conquest of the Crystal Palace (NES)

September 26, 2019

It's our 2nd Patron requested episode!  Patron "Burgerchamp" has selected Conquest of the Crystal Palace for the Nintendo, a game none of us had played before, and a game with a surprising developer!  This action platformer has a lot going for it -- most notably a dog you can summon -- but is it something you should hunt down to try? Also discussed: the new Contra Rogue Corps demo, Apple Arcade, and some listener questions about console failures, bad rentals, and games that made us a little sad. Want to skip right to Conquest of the Crystal Palace?  Start at 13:45! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 101 : Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast)

September 12, 2019

As we mentioned last episode, starting with episode 101 we are adding another generation to the podcast : Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance are now systems we consider to be retro, now that the Dreamcast is 20 years old!   And we chose Space Channel 5 to kick off the next 100 shows with a CHU! Ulala is a reporter for Space Channel 5, and she's been sent to uncover the truth about a new alien menace-- by dance-off!  Will Ulala's first game save the day, or is this another music-based game that may be more fun to watch than play?  Listen to hear what we thought! We also kick the show off with a short discussion about the most recent Nintendo Direct, and as always answer a stack of listener mail! Want to start right (up left down chu chu chu) at Space Channel 5?  Pick it up at the 9:50 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 100 : Tiger Handhelds

August 29, 2019

We made it to 100 episodes, and we aren't slowing down at all!  For our 100th episode spectacular, we've got a collection of Tiger handheld (and maybe a non-Tiger one) from the early days of handheld gaming to tell you about.  We're going to talk about 7 games total, from Double Dragon and concluding with our highly anticipated look at the MC Hammer game that Billy mentioned probably 95 episodes ago.  It's been a long road to get here, but at the end of that road -- we start to look down the next road... We also answer a batch of listener mail covering their thoughts on Tiger handhelds, special gaming rulesets, and thankfully -- not pee. Want to skip right to the handhelds (for some awful reason...)?   Then shift to that 12:30 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 99 : Fortified Zone (Game Boy)

August 15, 2019

Our first Patron requested game, Kyle VonKubik (aka ObeyKube of OneRadTee.com) selected Fortified Zone for the Nintendo Game Boy!  A game none of us had played or even heard about before, this 3/4 top view action shooter has a real Metal Gear feel to it.  Was this just another clone of a more popular franchise, or did this do something new and different, especially for a handheld console that had a lot of forgettable games over it's long lifespan? We also answered some listener questions about possibly covering movies, modern gaming concerns, and... pee? Want to skip right to the game, start at 8:10!   Want to skip to the pee question?  Maybe this isn't the podcast you want? __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? We answer a few listener mails as well, all about console launches, our personal lists of games we wish we hadn't covered, and more! Episode 97 : Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)

July 17, 2019

We're taking a look at the Treasure-made Genesis title, Gunstar Heroes!  A game highly regarded by action fans, we go back and play it again to see how well it holds up now.  We also answer some listener questions on mini console wishes and our best game hauls (but not game halls). Want to skip to Gunstar Heroes? Pick your starting level and weapon, and jump to the 10:30 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 96 : Rygar (NES)

July 4, 2019

This time we take a look at Tecmo's Rygar for the NES!  Based loosely on the 1986 arcade game of the same name, on the NES they completely redesigned the tale of The Legendary Warrior from a side-scrolling action arcade game into an early "Metroidvania", that existed before the 'vania part of that portmanteau was even a thing.  Did they succeed, or was this another case of a solid idea that just wasn't developed enough? We also discuss our thoughts on Mario Maker 2, the sequel to the Wii U Mario Maker, which we covered in full WAY back in Episode 10. Want to skip to Rygar?  Grab your Diskarmor and head to the 9:15 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 95 : Earthbound (SNES)

June 21, 2019

We try to cover a full-length 16-bit RPG as we take a look at Earthbound!  A sequel to Mother, a game not released in the US, when Mother 2 arrived in the states with a new name change and a questionable advertising strategy, it did not get received well... however, it has developed a dedicated cult following over the years, and so we took our time and played this fully to determine if this cult hit is deserving of its reputation as an underappreciated hit. We also answer some listener questions on Burgertime, the upcoming TG-16 mini console, and... Enya? Want to skip to Ness and his friends?  Start at the 8:15 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 94 : Kid Dracula (NES)

June 6, 2019

Now that we have access to this 1990 Famicom game outside Japan via the newly released Konami Castlevania Anniversary Collection, we finally get a chance to play Kid Dracula-- a game in the Castlevania timeline where you play Dracula's son (or maybe just a kid Dracula) as he attempts to regain his father's kingdom after a 10,000 year nap.   Does this belong in the same collection with some of the best games of the NES / SNES / and Genesis eras, or was this game better left as an odd footnote to a highly regarded series of games?  We let you know what we think. We also answer a fairly large pile of listener mail, and discuss odd peripherals, answer questions about this podcast itself, and of course more Taco Bell related questions. Episode 93 : Grim Fandango (PC)

May 22, 2019

Our first PC title (although it's been re-released on pretty much everything), we take a look at Grim Fandango, a later graphic adventure game from the folks who brought us Monkey Island and Full Throttle.  Is this as notoriously obtuse as some of the earlier games in the genre, or is this more of a case of technology and experience allowing some improvements to an old PC staple? Also discussed, possible guest hosts, some listener recommendations, and pre-NES / Master System era games, and if we would cover any. Episode 92 : Shinobi 3 - Return of the Ninja Master (Genesis)

May 9, 2019

This episode we visit a past Sega franchise that has been relatively quiet of late, the Shinobi series and master ninja Joe Musashi in what may be the best game in the series -- Shinobi 3 for the Genesis.  How does this one stack up to other 16-bit era platformers, and the rest of the series in general?  Listen to see! We also share our thoughts on several topics such as the Final Fantasy series, new retro consoles, sports titles, and other non-Shinobi topics when we answer several listener questions at the end of the show! Episode 91 : Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island (SNES)

April 18, 2019

The sequel to Super Mario World, but featuring Mario's sidekick Yoshi as the main character, Yoshi's Island kicked off the Yoshi series of games.  Did his first solo outing solidify Yoshi as more than a glorified mount for Mario?  We played it again now, and share our thoughts on this beautiful looking 2d title, with some notable flaws. Also discussed what Billy thought about Skate or Die 2, answered some listener questions, and avoided talking too much about Sekiro. Want to get right to the game? Episode 90 : Skate or Die 2 - The Search for Double Trouble (NES)

April 5, 2019

We take a look at a sequel to the skateboarding game that everyone owned, Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble.  Where the original was more of a collection of skating games, this sequel is a single player skateboarding adventure game.  Does this game end up being a totally radical experience, or a completely bogus waste of time? We also talk about Sekiro way too much, answer a handful of listener questions about classic gaming, and we talk about systems we haven't covered much and why. Don't want to hear any of that gnarly Sekiro talk?  Skip right to the game at the 10:00 mark! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 89 : Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis)

March 21, 2019

After being told we constantly nag on the Sega Genesis system for it's... interesting sound, we picked a game this week that at the very least has a very solid soundtrack, Rocket Knight Adventures!  This was one of Konami's Genesis exclusives, and it led to several sequels that were on multiple platforms, but how well does does Sparkster's initial journey hold up?  We played through the game to find out. Also discussed, some new Switch downloadable titles, the just announced Konami classic collections, and most importantly -- Taco Bell orders. Episode 88 : Zelda II The Adventure of Link (NES)

March 7, 2019

Maybe our most divisive episode yet, we dive into the sequel to one of the undisputed NES classic games (the Legend of Zelda) as we cover the side-scrolling follow-up Zelda II : The Adventure of Link.   Many people swear this game is the worst in the series, while many others love the fact that it's so different while still maintaining many staples of the Zelda series.  Even just the three of us have different opinions on what did and didn't work on Link's sophomore adventure. If you are one of those that love this, or someone that hated it, we try to back up our opinions here carefully, but we are sure to step on some toes with this one. As always, we cover a few listener questions, and take a criticism of our slights on the unique Sega Genesis sound. Everyone is playing the new Resident Evil 2 remake, so we thought it was a great time to look at what Resident Evil would look like if it was based on Jurassic Park instead of zombie movies -- Dino Crisis, originally released on the Sony Playstation in 1999! Do Resident Evil tank controls make a dinosaur based survival horror game still worth playing, or is this a case of two great tastes that don't really taste great together? We also read off several listener mails, covering game recommendations, comments about past shows, and best games on worst systems (and vice versa). December 24, 2018

UPDATE: Added our voices back in.  Hooray? Ho, ho, ho! It's Christmastime at the Retrovania dot net HQ, and so we've pulled out a holiday classic - Die Hard Trilogy! Ok, so there is nothing in this game that even remotely mentions Christmas, but this is a game that contains 3 completely separate games based on the first 3 Die Hard movies. Is this a rare case where you get a lot for your money, or are all three of these games worth throwing off the top of the Nakatomi building? Also discussed, our favorite current games that came out in 2018, our biggest disappointments of the year, and our personal favorite game we covered this year on Retrovaniacs! Will this game be found deserving to be on the Genesis game collections, or is Headdy just another bad 16-bit mascot? We've gotten more questions via Retrovania.net, so we end the show off answering 4 of them!  If you have a question, send it on over for a future episode, and we will try our best to not butcher your names. December 1, 2018

Since the Playstation Classic is coming out next week, and we already looked at several other games that are going to be on the mini-system, we decided to take on the first of the modern era Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid!  Does this game deserve to be on the classic, or is this another game that might be better left in our collective memories? YEEHAW! To be honest, much like everyone else we assumed we'd have been too busy with Red Dead Redemption 2 to play something that wasn't western and / or was a really long game.  So -- we're covering Natsume's Wild Guns on the SNES, a game that is short and western-ish.  Does this game still provide a rootin'-tootin' good time, or should this one be put out to pasture? We also take a listener question regarding ROM hacks, talk about the PS Classic lineup, and the surprise Amico announcement and what we think it will be. Episode 78 : Castlevania Symphony of the Night

October 18, 2018

It's the first Halloween episode of 2018, and we've decided to take a closer look at Symphony of the Night before the new HD re-release comes out at the end of the month with Castlevania : Requiem.  Does this game still have fangs, or is it a miserable pile (of secrets)?  We also covered the 16-bit Castlevanias previously, in Episode 35, way back in Halloween 2016. We also answer a listener question about bootlegs, and Billy has a terrifying memory that resurfaces... __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 77 : Shenmue (Dreamcast / remakes)

October 3, 2018

We broke from our own set of guidelines for this one, we're looking at Shenmue in honor of the HD re-releases of Shenmue 1 and 2, and the probable upcoming 3rd game in the series in 2019 (maybe).   We dive into the first game in the saga of Ryo Hazuki, who is sent around Yokosuka, Japan to find information on black cars, Chinese people, and of course sailors, as he hunts down Lan Di to get revenge for his father's death.  Does this game hold up at all in 2018, or was a game that was pretty clunky by 1999 standards even moreso now? We also answer a listener question on our favorite Halloween films, which kicks things off for the remainder of October as we celebrate #31DaysofHalloween across this podcast, Youtube channel, our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages... and also in our hearts? Want to skip past what we've been playing? Shift to that 9:00 mark. __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? Episode 76 : Chakan the Forever Man (Genesis)

September 21, 2018

Grab your favorite pair of swords and join the Retrovanics crew as we dive into the elemental planes of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water as we play Chakan the Forever Man for the Sega Genesis. We also talk about the new Switch onlien service with NES library, the Mega Man 11 demo, and we answer a listener question from "Seph" who asks us what sort of game we personally would make. Want to skip hearing about what we've been playing (and our thoughts on Mega Man 11)? Episode 75 : Startropics (NES)

September 6, 2018

Billy is back this week, as we take a look at a game that is included on the NES Classic that 2/3 of us had never played - Startropics! Join us as we help Mike find his lost Uncle, Dr. Jones, and find out why a parrot tells you to Do Me So Far Do Me. As a reminder, Kyle VonKubik's t-shirt Kickstarter ends in less than a week, however it's been fully funded!  There's still a little bit of time to order an exclusive retro-design shirt!  Check it out here! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946048492/arkado-returns-vintage-arcade-inspired-limited-edi Want to skip hearing about non-retro games we've been playing?  Skip to 8:15! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 74 : Bonk's Adventure (TurboGrafx-16)

August 23, 2018

We revisit the TurboGrafx-16 yet again, as we cover what became the mascot of the system in the US, Bonk, in his first outing. Did the little caveman with a giant noggin have what it takes to hold up to Sonic and Mario and make the TG-16 a force in the market again? Well, obviously not-- but Bonk still had a lot of promise. As a reminder, Kyle VonKubik's t-shirt Kickstarter still has a few weeks left, it's almost fully funded, but there's still a little bit of time to order an exclusive retro-design shirt!  Check it out here! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946048492/arkado-returns-vintage-arcade-inspired-limited-edi Want to skip hearing about non-retro games we've been playing?  Skip to 12:40! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 73 : Shadowrun (SNES / Genesis)

August 7, 2018

A listener request from Kyle VonKubik (see more below), this episode we definitely bit off more than we could chew, covering 2 completely different RPGs on the same source material, the pen and paper FASA RPG, Shadowrun.  Do either of these versions do the cyberpunk classic justice, and what makes them different?  We try to cover a lot in this hour+, and it probably got a little messy. Kyle VonKubik is also doing a Kickstarter for an amazing t-shirt design, Arkado Returns, which ends September 12th, and at the time this was posting is already over halfway there!  It's a pretty rad set of designs based on iconic arcade classics including QBert, Frogger, Pac-Land, KLAX, and loads more.  Check it out here, and consider backing it-- We did! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946048492/arkado-returns-vintage-arcade-inspired-limited-edi Want to skip hearing about non-retro games we've been playing?  Skip to 12:20! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 72 : Top Hunter Roddy and Cathy (Neo Geo)

July 19, 2018

SURPRISE!  We weren't sure what we were covering this episode when you last heard from us, but due to Jeremy's broken leg situation, we had to make it something you could play on Switch-- and the re-release of Top Hunter: Roddy and Cathy (originally on the Neo Geo) seemed like a solid choice.  None of us played this before, so we went into this with no pre-conceived notions!  Does this one hold up, or is it another case of "this may have been fun 25 years ago, but what is this?" We also push a neat retro-gaming t-shirt Arkado Returns by listener Kyle VonKubik, who also recommends our next game-- Shadowrun!   Check out his Kickstarter here : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/946048492/arkado-returns-vintage-arcade-inspired-limited-edi/description Want to skip hearing about non-retro games we've been playing?  Skip to 10:48! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 71 : Super Metroid (SNES)

July 5, 2018

This time we take a look at Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo, a game that is highly regarded as a classic game.  Instead of seeing if it's a good or bad game, we instead focus on what makes this game so good-- And does it still play well in 2018? We also take a listener question about our most nostalgic game purchase, and that leads us down memory road as we say goodbye to a retail icon and it's wonderfully mysterious game cage in the 80s/90s. Want to skip hearing about what else we've been playing?  Start at 9:37! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 70 : Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Sega Master System)

June 15, 2018

This time we revisit the Sega Master System, to look at a forgotten mascot of a major gaming powerhouse -- Sega's Alex Kidd, in his first adventure!  How effective is a game where Paper-Rock-Scissors is the method for combat? Listen to find out! We also discuss the other games in the Alex Kidd series, including his foray into the Genesis, before Alex got sent to the rest home for former mascot characters. Want to skip right to the good stuff?  Then listen from 8:19! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 69 : The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening (GameBoy)

May 31, 2018

It's a pocket-sized episode of Retrovaniacs, this time looking at the first handheld Zelda game -- Link's Awakening (and the color re-release that came out a few years later)!  Does this game hold up to the best the series has to offer, or will this wallow with the later DS entries in the area of "this was a better idea than reality"?  We also discuss the new Atari VCS Indiegogo success (?) and Jeremy P gets way too excited about the Intellvision Entertainment announcement. Want to skip straight to Link?  Start at the 11:00 mark. __________________________   If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 68 : Mega Man X (SNES)

May 15, 2018

To celebrate the Mega Man X collections, coming out this summer, we decided it was time to look at the first game in the second major Mega Man series-- Mega Man X for the Super Nintendo.  Also discussed, "go to" classic arcade games, in the arcades of our dreams. Want to skip right to Mega Man X?  Start listening at 9:24! __________________________   If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 67 : Road Rash (Genesis)

May 2, 2018

This time we take a look at the original Road Rash for the Sega Genesis.  Road Rash is another series that spawned a series of sequels and then just sort of faded away.  We have our thoughts on why that may have happened. Do you want to skip over Jeremy P talk about Persona 4 Golden (again)?  Then skip right to 8:50! __________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 66 : Sub Terrania (Genesis)

April 19, 2018

This episode, we try a game none of us have played before - Sub Terrania on the Sega Genesis! Based on the box, this looked to be a fairly standard top down shooter, but don't judge this game by it's box... We also discuss some of the new retro announcements by Sega (Shenmue remakes and Mini-Genesis), and... the Rampage movie? Want to skip hearing about things that aren't Sub Terrania?  Skip to 8:50! __________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from?  It's easy, and helps people find us by accident. Episode 65 : Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx-16)

March 30, 2018

Jeremy P makes another valiant effort to find a TurboGrafx-16 game that everyone will enjoy, as we take a look at 1991's Silent Debuggers! Does he succeed? Also, is it possible to use the word "Slog" and have it mean something good?  How mad was Billy that we waited for him to cover this game? We also answer a listener question, regarding the good and bad of Sega and Nintendo's early efforts in the US Market! Want to skip the pre-show rambling and skip right to the good stuff?  Skip to the 8:00 mark. Next episode, we're looking at Sub-Terrania on the Genesis! _______________________________________ If you like Retrovaniacs, do us a huge favor and review it on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, or just write about it on a bathroom stall.  Everything helps. Episode 64 : Kirby Super Star (SNES)

March 16, 2018

In honor of the release of Kirby Star Allies (and in no way because we just picked a game at random and Jeremy P was slow to edit the show), we're posting our look at Kirby Super Star for the Super NES.  This game, which is also on the SNES Classic, is different from the previous Kirby releases, but how different?  This was our first look at Kirby as a whole, so did we love it, or did we determine our previous lack of interest in Kirby was completely valid?  Listen and see! Also discussed, our thoughts on retro-styled Kickstarter releases Yooka-Laylee and Mighty No. 9, now that we've taken some time to play them.  We loved Banjo-Kazooie, and everyone on Earth loved Mega Man, but what did we think of the spiritual successors to both? Next episode : Billy is back and Jeremy P forces another TG-16 title on everyone -- Silent Debuggers.  FOR REAL THIS TIME! __ Listen, you read this far, which means you listen.  Please review us on iTunes or Stitcher or even just on a bathroom wall.  It helps people find us, even if it's just "For a good time..." Thanks!

Episode 63 : Magician Lord (Neo Geo)

February 27, 2018

We return to the Neo Geo for the 2nd time, this time for launch title Magician Lord.  Will a game we all remember for "not getting past the first level" end up any less frustrating when being played on a home console? Listen to find out! Don't want to hear about what else we've been up to?  Skip to the 6:00 mark! Magician Lord is available on the original Neo Geo, but thankfully can also be purchased on the Playstation Network, on the Switch, probably on XBox Live, and is also available on the Wii and Vita on the SNK Neo Geo Collection, if you'd like to play along. ______   Do you listen to Retrovaniacs and actually read these notes?  I doubt it.  But if you do, please give us a review on iTunes, or tell other gamers about how nice we are.

Episode 62 : Casino Kid (NES)

February 14, 2018

Have you ever helplessly wandered around in a casino, talking to everyone just to figure out where to play Draw Poker?  If so, have we got the game for you this week.  We're playing Casino Kid for the NES! We also talk way too long about Monster Hunter World, but thankfully we waited until the end of the episode. Next episode, we return to the Neo Geo for some Magician Lord! _____   Do you like us?  Why not tell a friend?  Or review us on iTunes?  Or hijack a radio station and play it over the airwaves!  We aren't picky!

Episode 61 : Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! (NES)

January 30, 2018

Stick and Move! Stick and Move! It's about time we take a look at another sports-ish title, and so we've gotten into the ring with a legend -- Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! for the NES.  We talk about all the games in the Punch Out series a little, but we go the full three rounds with the NES classic.  Next week: We're visiting the Golden Crumbs Casino to meet our destiny...

Episode 60 : Super Star Wars (SNES)

January 15, 2018

Our short unintended hiatus is over, and the first episode of 2018 is here!  This time, we take a look at Super Star Wars, and it's sequels Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi!  This topic was supposed to hit right around the release of The Last Jedi, but, well, it didn't.  But, that gave us more time to play three separate games to discuss. Want to skip right to the game?  Start listening at 10:11! New theme music for 2018 - "8-Bitter" by Subtastics If you have a question about retrogaming for Retrovaniacs, please send us a question on Twitter @retrovaniadotnet, on Facebook, or by emailing retrovaniadotnet at gmail.com! Next episode, get ready to get in the ring...

Episode 59 : Bubsy (SNES / Genesis)

November 28, 2017

"What could PAWSsibly go wrong?"  Bubsy asks you that question at the start of his first game, and we take some time to really take a deep look at not only Bubsy, but the sequels to determine the answer to that question. We also answer a listener question, about admitting when you may have been wrong about not liking a game. Next episode we celebrate the release of The Last Jedi with a look at a much younger Luke and his passage off Tatooine with the classic SNES trilogy of Star Wars games.

Episode 58 : Alien 3 (SNES)

November 15, 2017

We're taking on another listener request, from George (@captaingodbody on Twitter), who asked us to cover "any classic Alien game".  So, we chose the Super Nintendo game based on the third best movie in the Alien franchise, Alien 3. We also take a few minutes to talk with George on his thoughts on the game, and compare it a little to the Genesis version of this game, which was the first game made based on the film -- this came out a year later. Next week... oh boy, it's Bubsy time.

Episode 57 : Resident Evil (PlayStation)

October 31, 2017

For Halloween 2017, we've decided to look back at one of the defining games in survival horror, the original Resident Evil for PlayStation!  We look back, from an era where some of the shortcomings of this game are undeniable-- but does it still hold up now?  Does this game actually work better with it's original limitations, or is this another case of a game that time has not treated too kindly?

Episode 56: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (NES)

October 17, 2017

Halloween 2017 starts off with a SPLAT as we look at the video game based on the cartoon based on the sequel to the 1978 "classic", Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.   Want to skip the intro where we bare our souls to you (or more accurately just say what we've been playing lately)?  Skip to 9:26.   Also discussed, some retro and not-so-retro selections for your Halloween gaming month!   Next week, we return to one of the masters of Survival Horror, as we look at Resident Evil.

Episode 55 : Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis)

October 5, 2017

Everybody knows Michael Jackson's hits, but have you played Michael Jackson's video game?  We certainly did, and this week we're looking at Michael Jackson's Moonwalker for the Sega Genesis.  Based on the movie of the same name, we're going to help MJ save children from the evil Mr. Big, and probably pull of some incredible dance moves on the way-- but is this a case of "Can't Stop Til You Get Enough", or is it just plain "Bad"?   Listen to this one, and find out if we liked this one, and if any of us "Beat It". I'm not sorry for those puns. We also discuss the SNES Classic, and our attempts to get one, and there's some more news on the Atari Box, and it's not really good news. Next episode : Halloween month starts, and we're going to take on Attack of the Killer Tomatoes for the NES.

Episode 54 : Mega Man Legends (PlayStation)

September 22, 2017

Mega Man made that 32 bit jump many classic games made, the leap into 3d.   Would this be a Super Mario 64-esque success, or a Bubsy 3D abomination?   Or would it be something wholly different... We also take a listener question about classic games we are afraid to play now because they won't meet our expectations. Next episode : We all learn how to Moonwalk.

Episode 53 : Super Black Bass (SNES)

September 5, 2017

Labor day and summer vacations are over, and the Retrovaniacs are here to ease you out of vacation with a relaxing review of Super Black Bass for the Super Nintendo.  Calmly float around in a lake, catching fish and winning tournaments in a pure state of relaxation -- or if you are Jeremy P, this could be the most frustrating game you've played for this podcast.  Also, we take a look at a recent retro-styled release, Sonic Mania!  Is this finally the 2d Sonic Game we've been waiting for, or does it miss the mark much like every other Sonic game since the 16-bit era? Next week we look at a classic icon's odd strays into the third dimension... _____________ Want to skip right to the fishing?  Start at 10:40! Tired of fishing and want to hear what we think of Sonic Mania?  Skip ahead to 48:01! If you want to sneak by the sleeping Ogre Lord, turn to 152.

Episode 52: Flashback (Genesis/SNES/3DO/etc)

August 14, 2017

This week we again did not review a fishing game, but instead take on a multi-platform sci-fi action adventure game, Flashback.  The follow up game to Another World, Flashback merged PC adventure puzzle games and 2d action platformers, and wrapped it in a neat story that's part Total Recall, part They Live, part The Running Man-- really how could that go wrong? Also discussed this week, the newest AtGames Sega Flashback unit.  Will this be as nice as more recent official retro system releases? Next episode : Ok I mean it we're really doing Super Black Bass.

Episode 51: Final Fantasy VIII (PlayStation)

July 29, 2017

THIS ISN'T SUPER BLACK BASS!?  No, as Billy was unavailable this week, the Jeremy's instead delayed that episode and instead took this chance to talk about where Final Fantasy VIII went wrong.  We apologize in advance for a very negative episode about FFVIII, but we do go into detail about what specifically we don't like, and it's not just that the characters are hateable and the story is awful. *** This episode is filled with spoilers, so if you haven't played FFVIII and really want to (we are sorry), then please skip this one. *** Jeremy P has tried playing through this game many, many times, and most recently spent several weeks of 2017 getting to the very end of it before life forced him to throw in the towel.  Will he play it again?  What exactly doesn't he like about this game? We also talk about the Atari Box, or wonder what exactly it is. Next game -- Who knows?

Episode 50: Earthworm Jim series (Multiplatform)

July 7, 2017

It's our 50th episode, and we wanted to cover a classic game series that wasn't one of the major characters, so we chose Earthworm Jim!  We take close looks at the first two games in the series, and a glancing look at the regrettable 3D entry.  Next episode... Fishing? If you want to skip straight to Jim talk, start off at 8:40!

Episode 49: Uninvited (NES)

June 13, 2017

This week, the Retrovaniacs take a (spoiler filled) look at an NES port of a Macventure title, Uninvited!  Was anyone able to complete this graphic point-and-click adventure without looking up some hints?  Did any of us finish this game at all?   Listen to find out!  Spoilers abound here though, so if you somehow are in the middle of this game and don't want to figure out what the tomato monster is -- probably stop at around the 30 minute mark! *** AGAIN PLEASE NOTE, LOTS OF SPOILERS HERE! *** Afterwards, the Jeremys talk way too much about Persona 5, but that won't happen until 53:30, so you should stop there if you don't want some very minor early game spoilers. Want to skip the pre-game updates, start up the show at 5:40! Next up it's episode 50, and that means we take on a classic series starting one of our favorite invertibrates!

Episode 48 : Wonder Boy III The Dragon’s Trap (Master System)

May 30, 2017

(Edit 1/3/23 - This episode stopped loading, so we re-uploaded this one.  Hope it's not showing up as new in your feeds-- if so, sorry!) This episode we take a look not only at the Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, but also discuss the recent remake for modern consoles.  How does the remake hold up, but more importantly, is this the sort of game that needed a remake at all? We also answer a listener question, about if we have considered comparing all ports of a specific game or games, and we somehow talk about the Virtual Boy instead. Want to skip right to the game?  Try starting at 9:43!

Episode 47 : Vectorman (Genesis)

May 6, 2017

The three of us take a look at a 1995 Sega Genesis game we had never played before, Vectorman!  Included on several collections of Genesis games, most notably the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Vectorman seemed to be Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country-- but how does it hold up in 2017? Want to skip right to Vectorman?  Start listening at 12:14! Next episode we hit another time-relevant favorite of Jeremy P's with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for the Sega Master System.

Episode 46 : Disney Afternoon Classics (NES)

April 25, 2017

Something different this time, a modern retro compilation episode!  Billy returns to discuss one of the best compilations of classic NES titles -- the Disney Afternoon Collection!   We cover all 5 titles, Ducktales and Ducktales 2, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers 1 & 2, Talespin, and Darkwing Duck.   Have these titles aged well?  Does this collection provide enough to make it worth grabbing?  (Spoilers: the answer to both is a resounding yes!) Also, as Billy is here, Jeremy and Billy discuss their new Switches and what they think of them, and we all mourn the end of the NES Classic. Next episode : Back to basics, one classic console game discussed -- Vectorman for the Genesis

Episode 45 : Skyblazer (SNES)

April 7, 2017

Jeremy P and Jeremy take on a SNES game that both of us thought was another game when we heard it.  Skyblazer for the SNES is actually NOT Soulblazer, and is instead an amalgamation of many SNES action adventure games we had played previously. Does this make this game notably amazing like chocolate and peanut butter, or not as great like pickles and caramel. I don't know what that means, but clearly I need to eat. Billy should return next week, when we celebrate the release of the Disney Afternoon Classics collection, as we play ALL 6 games in their original NES format.

Episode 44 : Military Madness (TurboGrafx-16)

March 20, 2017

Billy is MIA still, but the show must go on -- and so the Jeremys cover a strategy classic for the TurboGrafx, Military Madness. Also -- Jeremy P talks a little Zelda and the Switch release, and both of us gush over the recently announced "Disney Afternoon Classics" collection hitting in less than a month, which is probably the best gaming announcement of 2017.

Episode 43 : Double Dragon 1 - 4 (NES and PS4/PC)

February 28, 2017

This week Billy couldn't join us, so we have guest host Dave Boyce of Broken Glasses Gaming, the Clouded Judgement Podcast, and Preternia.com here to help us cover a classic series with a modern sequel -- Double Dragon! We walk through our thoughts on the first 3 games on the NES, and then dive into the new sequel Double Dragon 4 for the PS4 and PC, a brand new game that looks exactly like it's 8 bit brethren. Thanks again Dave!   Next time : Billy returns to help us take on another attempt by Jeremy P to force the Turbografx-16 on everyone, with Military Madness.

300 YouTube Subscriber Thank You!

February 21, 2017

No new show this week, due to some scheduling conflicts (and that we're talking about 4+ games for our next show), we've had to push off the Double Dragon show to next Tuesday.  However, we did want to take time to personally thank everyone for listening as we hit our 300 subscriber mark on YouTube!   See you in a week for Double Dragon 1-4, and thank you for listening and watching over the last two years!

Episode 42 : Sonic Spinball (Genesis)

February 8, 2017

Join the Retrovaniacs this week as we visit the world of video pinball the first time, with Sonic Spinball for the Sega Genesis.    Also discussed is a listener question about what started us all in gaming, which isn't as depressing an answer as you'd believe.   Next week : It's the return of Bimmy and Jimmy-- in 2017?

Episode 41 : Metal Slug (NeoGeo)

January 24, 2017

We take our first look at the NeoGeo system, with a series of games that will definitely challenge your run-and-gun shooter skillls, Metal Slug 1-6 (via the Metal Slug Anthology).  Before we dig into what Billy has aptly described as "cartoon Contra", we reflect on the NeoGeo itself, and why none of us have ever owned one. We also answer a listener question : What same-room multiplayer games would cause the most confrontation, and what were you good at? Check out our Twitter feed, @retrovaniacs, where we'll put some links to videos of Jeremy P playing Metal Slug! Next week, we try out some pinball.  Or spinball.  Or something.

Episode 40: Predator (NES)

January 10, 2017

This week we review a game based on one of the best action movies of all time, Predator for the NES.  Will this game be nearly as good as the movie it's based on? Also we look back at 2016, listing our favorite games and biggest disappointments, and try not to just cry about the Wii U. Next up : We look at a run-and-gun shooter on the NEO GEO...

Episode 39 : Batman Returns (Multiplatform)

December 24, 2016

It's a very Retrovaniacs Christmas, with a loosely holiday themed game -- Batman Returns for mainly the SNES and Sega Genesis!  Watch the movie, it happens around Christmas.  Also there is a level with Christmas presents in the background. Look, we're clearly stretching here to tie this one to the holidays, but we do have a Christmas present related listener question, which brings us back to the Christmas mornings of yesteryears. Next episode : If it bleeds, we can kill it...

Episode 38: Tomba! (Playstation)

December 16, 2016

Doing something a little different this week -- before Retrovaniacs the podcast, there was just Retrovania.net, a site where we posted video reviews and gaming articles.  One of those reviews was on Tomba! for the Sony Playstation.   This review received the most criticism from folks who didn't agree with Jeremy Gregory -- including Jeremy Parmentier.    One Jeremy loves it, one Jeremy hates it, and Billy Holiday is here playing for the first time.  We're taking a second look at Tomba!, an interesting 2D/3D questing platformer for the Sony Playstation, and then we spend FAR too long discussing our thoughts on the first 10-20 hours of Final Fantasy XV!   So -- if you have no interest in hearing about FFXV, you can skip the last half of the show!

We also tackle a listener question regarding what game we would play if we knew this was our last few minutes alive! In an unprecedented display of planning, we have our next two games already chosen!  First up is Air Zonk for the TurboGrafx-16 (listener request), and then we take on one of Jeremy P's favorite games of all time, Kid Icarus for the NES.

Also discussed, a listener question regarding emulation versus units like the upcoming mini NES and the Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision Flashback units, and why grown men are excited about 30 old NES games coming out again in November. January 20, 2016

We dive into the late Sega Master System library and unearth quite the diamond, Golden Axe Warrior.  Well, it's more like Cubic Zirconia.  It looks nice, it might impress someone who has no idea about what they are looking at, and it's clearly a copy of something far more impressive.  Honestly, it has a lot more in common with a Nintendo classic than anything else with the Golden Axe name on it.We also take a listener question this week: What game can you play over and over due to nostalgia that you also can admit is a pretty terrible game?Next week, put on your swamp hat, and dust off the NES -- we're heading to the Bayou...

November 26, 2015

It's almost Thanksgiving, and at Retrovaniacs, we didn't want you to think we'd miss out on this opportunity to... ok, this game has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.  It's Blast Corps, the first RARE created game for the Nintendo 64, and it's this week's amazing choice for our look back through the annals of gaming. In honor of Thanksgiving (and the start of the Christmas season), we tell some Black Friday stories and generally feel smug that thanks to the internet, we can all sit in our house on Black Friday eating stuffing and cranberry sandwiches while we buy gifts for relatives we rarely enjoy spending time with.

Episode 11 - Haunting starring Polterguy (Genesis)

October 14, 2015

Episode 7 - Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (TurboGrafx 16)

August 19, 2015

We delve into the oft-overlooked 16-bit console, the TurboGrafx-16 this time, appropriately by looking at the original pack-in title, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. Also discussed, what were our most regrettable classic console purchases, and how did we ever know what was good or not in the pre-internet days?   Really, how do we even know that now?For more coverage of this weeks game, check us out on Twitter (@retrovaniacs) where we will have not just the comic that came with the game but some sample Vines of gameplay!

Episode 4 - General Chaos (Genesis)

July 7, 2015

We're not just Nintendo fanboys, and this week we delve for the first time into the library of the Sega Genesis for cult hit, General Chaos. Why would someone make a real-time strategy combat game on the Genesis? We aren't sure, but the resulting game was definitely unforgettable. Also discussed this week were Batman: Arkham Knight, random JRPGs that Jeremy P is wasting his time with, and we cover some of the Kickstarter retro projects that have come through that we are excited about seeing or are disappointed in their failures.
