We're taking a look at the Metroid series first game into a 3D environment with 2002's Metroid Prime.  Released at the same time as Metroid Fusion - a more standard 2d Metroid game on the Game Boy Advance, this was a game developed by Retro Studios for Nintendo that tried to take the series into literally a new dimension.  Did it succeed in it's purpose, and is this still worth playing now?  We'll let you know our thoughts on it. We're covering another request - Suikoden for the PlayStation!  This game is a classic style JRPG that adds a large cast of playable characters, large scale battles, and an upgrade system that allows you to really modify your party in many ways.  This game led to a series that was prevalent on the PlayStation 1 and 2, but has faded out over the years, although there is an HD remaster on the way.  We played the original to see how this one holds up today! Our apparent love affair with Rare continues, as we look at another one of their offerings, Conker's Bad Fur Day. Originally released on the Nintendo 64, it was re-released later with some multiplayer addons for the XBox. Why would you play another cartoony looking 3d platformer? Maybe because this one, despite its looks, is clearly not for kids. Is that a good thing? We played it again to see! For our last regular episode of 2020, we take a look at an early Hideo Kojima game that most of us in the US have no way to play - Snatcher, which was only released outside of Japan on the Sega CD format.  Kojima's post-Metal Gear game is not an action stealth game like his most famous series, but instead is a sci-fi story driven interactive storybook that would appeal to fans of Blade Runner.   And as a bonus, it occurs around Christmas! This time we tried something slightly different from the norm, instead of looking at one specific game, we are looking at two very similar top down shooters from the NES era, Alpha Mission (by SNK) and Star Force (by Tecmo).  Both of these arcade ports are ones that we had as kids -- both share the dubious honor of being a game we bought "because they were there" and as a result played them a lot. We look at these two games specifically to answer a question : Is it better to be a game that tries to do a lot of interesting things but sort of fails, or a game that tries to do almost nothing and succeeds? Do you like to play retro RPGs?  The RPGs of the 8, 16, and 32-bit era of games are sometimes a little tough to get into, but we're going to take them on, one at a time, week by week.  Weekend Warriors is our chance to do just that!  This first episode is covering the first few hours of Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System.   Every week we will play another 5 hours or so of the game, find a checkpoint, and then talk about that week of the game, up until we beat it.  This way, you could casually play along with us if you like! This time we take a look at Tecmo's Rygar for the NES!  Based loosely on the 1986 arcade game of the same name, on the NES they completely redesigned the tale of The Legendary Warrior from a side-scrolling action arcade game into an early "Metroidvania", that existed before the 'vania part of that portmanteau was even a thing.  Did they succeed, or was this another case of a solid idea that just wasn't developed enough? We try to cover a full-length 16-bit RPG as we take a look at Earthbound!  A sequel to Mother, a game not released in the US, when Mother 2 arrived in the states with a new name change and a questionable advertising strategy, it did not get received well... however, it has developed a dedicated cult following over the years, and so we took our time and played this fully to determine if this cult hit is deserving of its reputation as an underappreciated hit. Now that we have access to this 1990 Famicom game outside Japan via the newly released Konami Castlevania Anniversary Collection, we finally get a chance to play Kid Dracula-- a game in the Castlevania timeline where you play Dracula's son (or maybe just a kid Dracula) as he attempts to regain his father's kingdom after a 10,000 year nap.   Does this belong in the same collection with some of the best games of the NES / SNES / and Genesis eras, or was this game better left as an odd footnote to a highly regarded series of games?  We let you know what we think. Maybe our most divisive episode yet, we dive into the sequel to one of the undisputed NES classic games (the Legend of Zelda) as we cover the side-scrolling follow-up Zelda II : The Adventure of Link.   Many people swear this game is the worst in the series, while many others love the fact that it's so different while still maintaining many staples of the Zelda series.  Even just the three of us have different opinions on what did and didn't work on Link's sophomore adventure. In honor of the release of Kirby Star Allies (and in no way because we just picked a game at random and Jeremy P was slow to edit the show), we're posting our look at Kirby Super Star for the Super NES.  This game, which is also on the SNES Classic, is different from the previous Kirby releases, but how different?  This was our first look at Kirby as a whole, so did we love it, or did we determine our previous lack of interest in Kirby was completely valid?  Listen and see! This week we again did not review a fishing game, but instead take on a multi-platform sci-fi action adventure game, Flashback.  The follow up game to Another World, Flashback merged PC adventure puzzle games and 2d action platformers, and wrapped it in a neat story that's part Total Recall, part They Live, part The Running Man-- really how could that go wrong? Also discussed this week, the newest AtGames Sega Flashback unit.  Will this be as nice as more recent official retro system releases? THIS ISN'T SUPER BLACK BASS!?  No, as Billy was unavailable this week, the Jeremy's instead delayed that episode and instead took this chance to talk about where Final Fantasy VIII went wrong.  We apologize in advance for a very negative episode about FFVIII, but we do go into detail about what specifically we don't like, and it's not just that the characters are hateable and the story is awful. *** This episode is filled with spoilers, so if you haven't played FFVIII and really want to (we are sorry), then please skip this one. *** Jeremy P has tried playing through this game many, many times, and most recently spent several weeks of 2017 getting to the very end of it before life forced him to throw in the towel.  Will he play it again?  What exactly doesn't he like about this game? Jeremy P and Jeremy take on a SNES game that both of us thought was another game when we heard it.  Skyblazer for the SNES is actually NOT Soulblazer, and is instead an amalgamation of many SNES action adventure games we had played previously. Does this make this game notably amazing like chocolate and peanut butter, or not as great like pickles and caramel. I don't know what that means, but clearly I need to eat. Billy should return next week, when we celebrate the release of the Disney Afternoon Classics collection, as we play ALL 6 games in their original NES format.

Doing something a little different this week -- before Retrovaniacs the podcast, there was just Retrovania.net, a site where we posted video reviews and gaming articles.  One of those reviews was on Tomba! for the Sony Playstation.   This review received the most criticism from folks who didn't agree with Jeremy Gregory -- including Jeremy Parmentier.    One Jeremy loves it, one Jeremy hates it, and Billy Holiday is here playing for the first time.  We're taking a second look at Tomba!, an interesting 2D/3D questing platformer for the Sony Playstation, and then we spend FAR too long discussing our thoughts on the first 10-20 hours of Final Fantasy XV!   So -- if you have no interest in hearing about FFXV, you can skip the last half of the show!

We dive into the late Sega Master System library and unearth quite the diamond, Golden Axe Warrior.  Well, it's more like Cubic Zirconia.  It looks nice, it might impress someone who has no idea about what they are looking at, and it's clearly a copy of something far more impressive.  Honestly, it has a lot more in common with a Nintendo classic than anything else with the Golden Axe name on it.We also take a listener question this week: What game can you play over and over due to nostalgia that you also can admit is a pretty terrible game?Next week, put on your swamp hat, and dust off the NES -- we're heading to the Bayou...

Here's a game I'm certain most of you haven't played -- Mansion of Hidden Souls for the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis.   This is a classic point-and-click adventure title, like Myst, but about butterflies and poorly placed keys.  A selection by one Billy Holiday, and an episode not to be missed!We also answer a listener question : What are our favorite / least favorite snow levels in classic gaming?Also, like every show, we reveal next show's topic.  Our next show will be around Christmas, so what game do you think we picked?

It's almost Thanksgiving, and at Retrovaniacs, we didn't want you to think we'd miss out on this opportunity to... ok, this game has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.  It's Blast Corps, the first RARE created game for the Nintendo 64, and it's this week's amazing choice for our look back through the annals of gaming.In honor of Thanksgiving (and the start of the Christmas season), we tell some Black Friday stories and generally feel smug that thanks to the internet, we can all sit in our house on Black Friday eating stuffing and cranberry sandwiches while we buy gifts for relatives we rarely enjoy spending time with.

This week, we take a look at the NES 1990 classic, Little Nemo the Dream Master.  This might be the only game where you feed candy to a bee, but we made no research to back that claim up.We also answer a listener question about regrettable game sales.  Billy uses this time to get teary-eyed about an MC Hammer game.

It's the second part of our Halloween extravaganza, and this week we look at not one... but THREE classic video games.  First up, we revisit the Turbografx-16 and the original Splatterhouse, in which Rick and Jennifer make the mistake of getting out of the rain at an abandoned mansion.  Then we switch to the Sega Genesis for Splatterhouse 2, where Rick returns to save Jennifer (again) with the help of the demon mask.  Finally, we dig up the bones of Splatterhouse 3, in which the series tries to do some new things, and the results are less than stellar.Our listener question for this week is two-fold : What game gave you your first real jump-scare?  What game has scared you the most ever?  Shockingly, Billy and Jeremy P didn't say General Chaos.For more Halloween gaming excitement, don't forget to check out Retrovania.net for the rest of the month!

It's our 10th episode spectacular, and this week we have chosen to slip slightly out of our own guidelines to cover not a true classic game, but a modern game that should appeal to any classic NES fan, Super Mario Maker for the Wii U!   It's got all the classic 2D Mario action that you could ever want or imagine, and as such we get to talk about staples of a series we have been playing for 30 years.Also this week, Jeremy G has an electronic doomsday of sorts, and that leads him down a path that thankfully leads to the Rare Replay collection for the Xbox One!

We're not just Nintendo fanboys, and this week we delve for the first time into the library of the Sega Genesis for cult hit, General Chaos. Why would someone make a real-time strategy combat game on the Genesis? We aren't sure, but the resulting game was definitely unforgettable.Also discussed this week were Batman: Arkham Knight, random JRPGs that Jeremy P is wasting his time with, and we cover some of the Kickstarter retro projects that have come through that we are excited about seeing or are disappointed in their failures.
